Do you feel that? The sun is out, there's a breeze, and your skin isn't sizzling from the sun for another month or so. There’s something about spring in Nashville that makes me want to be outside as much as possible while the weather is bearable (i'm still a northerner at heart). But after months of cold and rainy, Olive and I have been eager to get out, soak up the sunshine, and explore. Luckily for you, we’ve got a few favorite spots to share that are not only free (or low-cost) but also perfect for toddlers. If you’re looking for a mix of nature, hands-on fun, and space for little ones to run wild, these places are worth checking out.

Shelby Bottoms Nature Center & Greenway
📍 Location: East Nashville
💰 Cost: Free
📆 Spring Schedule: Check here (New seasonal schedule releases end of May)

Shelby Bottoms is one of my favorite places in Nashville, not only does it have activities, but the Greenway, the pond, and the Nature Center (all being free!!!) really make it a gem in a city where breathing seems to cost money most days. The nature center itself is small, but has so many things for kids to do — puzzles, coloring stations, and even stuffed wildlife. But the real magic is outside. We’ve done runs, played in the sandbox (though the Nature Playground is currently under construction), and even attended an expert led nature hunt for lichens (which I did not expect to find as interesting as I did). They host several "led" events per week (during the week too for those SAH parents looking to get out of the house)
One of the best things about Shelby Bottoms is how versatile it is—some days we stick to the trails and enjoy the scenery, and other times, we stop by the pond to toss pebbles and watch the ducks. If you’re a parent who likes to squeeze in some exercise, the greenway is stroller-friendly and perfect for a jog while your little one naps.

Cheekwood ‘TOTS’ Program
📍 Location: Belle Meade
💰 Cost: Included with general admission ($25/Adult, $15/Ages 3-10, Free Under 3) or free with membership
📆 Spring Schedule: Check here (Runs Tuesday-Saturday, weather permitting, through all spring and summer, with current schedule out through May)
Cheekwood’s ‘TOTS’ program has been on my radar for a while, but we kept getting rained out (spring weather is unpredictable!). Still, I love that it’s designed specifically for toddlers to get their hands dirty—literally. There are sensory activities, art projects, and nature-themed crafts that make this a great way to let kids explore without worrying about making a mess at home. If you’re planning to go, just know that you might end up leaving with a dirty (but very happy) kiddo.

Mary’s Magical Place (Hendersonville)
📍 Location: Hendersonville
💰 Cost: Free
📆 Events: Occasional community events (Easter egg hunt in April!)
If your toddler has energy to burn (funny right), this playground is awesome. It’s completely accessible, which means soft turf, safe surfaces, and plenty of space to roam without worry. Olive LOVES slides (There are several at varying heights), the spinning seat, and running very fast, ducking under every obstacle she can find to throw me off. Plus, the fencing around the entire playground makes it easier to keep track of little ones. We met up with some other moms for a "playdate" here (us waving at each other from across the park) and still managed to have a good time.

Things to Note (for All Locations)
Free parking & restrooms are available at all three locations.
All are stroller-friendly, making them great options for babies and toddlers.
Food Nearby: Hendersonville and Belle Meade have major chains like Panera, Chick-fil-A, and Starbucks nearby. Shelby Bottoms is a little more secluded, but we love grabbing a bite at Ugly Mugs or Cafe Roze. That said, to make the most of your day, I’d recommend packing a lunch- and bringing extra water!
